The Punjab Human Capital Investment Project (PHCIP) is a project of Government of the Punjab sponsored by World Bank. The PHCIP aims to increase the utilization of quality healthcare services and economic & social inclusion programs among poor and vulnerable households in Punjab. The project will be implemented in 11 districts of Punjab with lowest human capital attainment namely Bahawalpur, Muzaffargarh, Bhakkar, Dera Ghazi Khan, Mianwali, Rahim Yar Khan, Rajanpur, Bahawalnagar, Khushab, Layyah and Lodharan. The PHCIP is providing support in key sectors of Health, Education, and Social Protection and will be jointly implemented by Punjab Primary and Secondary Health Department (PSHD), Punjab Social Protection Authority (PSPA) and Punjab School Education Department (SED).

The Health Component of the Punjab Human Capital Investment Project (PHCIP) aims to:

• Upgrade 166 Basic Health Units (BHUs) and 17 Rural Health Centers (RHCs)
• Recruit additional Human Resource for 24/7 BHUs and RHC Plus
• Provide Equipment, Essential Medical Supplies, Nutrition Commodities and Family Planning Commodities
• Establish Pediatric Nurseries
• Introduce Electronic Medical Record (EMR)
• Train Staff
• Implement Hospital Waste Management

The Health Component of PHCIP is focused on improving Maternal & Newborn Child Health in the first 1000 days of life. With a mission to improve access and utilization of healthcare facilities, the project has introduced Conditional Cash Transfer for eligible Pregnant and Lactating Women (PLWs) on timely health checkups during pregnancy, safe delivery, immunization of children under the age of two and birth registration.
